Soil Treatment

Specialised treatment centre for contaminated soil

Situated at Augean’s hazardous landfill facility in Port Clarence, Terramundo operates the country’s largest soil treatment centre.

The plant uses the most advanced treatment technologies including physico-chemical treatment and bioremediation.

Physico-chemical soil treatment is an effective technique to clean contaminated soils, removing a wide range of both organic and inorganic contaminants.

Contaminants adhere to the fine-fraction of the soil, such as organic matter and clay/silt.

The principle of the method utilizes the difference in grain-size and density of the materials and separates the different fractions by means of screens, hydrocyclones and upstream classification.

Pollutants in the input material are separated and transferred from the sand and gravel fractions to a filter-cake residue which is then analysed and disposed of to the Augean landfill facilty. Cleaned materials are then available for secondary use.

Applicability

  • Physico-chemical soil treatment can be applied to the treatment of contaminated soils, sandy sediments, sewer sediments and construction debris.
  • The process is ideal for soils with a high granular content, typically below 30% w/w fines (<63µm).
  • Physico-chemical soil treatment can remove a wide range of chemical contaminants including most organic contaminants such as TPH, PAH’s and PCB’s and inorganic contaminants such as Heavy Metals and Cyanides.
  • Bioremediation is suitable for all types of soil contaminated with organic pollutants (e.g. mineral oil…)

Environmental Benefits

  • The soil treatment centre can tackle a broad range of contaminants.
  • Soil treatment becomes available for sites where on site treatment is not a viable option.
  • Soil treatment can also be used as a pre-treatment to reduce contamination to acceptable levels before landfilling.
  • Soil treatment allows for recycling and recovery of secondary building materials.

Complete & Sustainable Solution

  • Clients will be offered both treatment & landfill options to match their requirements.
  • The site is accessible by road and by sea allowing it to accept waste nationally.

In essence, the process involves the following stages:

Preliminary Treatment
Separation of metal parts by magnetic overhead belts. Separation of gravels by size via vibrating and wet-screening.

Sand Decontamination
Separation of the fine clay and silt particles from the coarser sand fraction using hydrocyclones and upstream classification.
After dewatering, the clean sand can be reused. Possible applications may be as raw materials for construction purposes.

Gravel Washing Unit
The stone and gravel-fraction is cleaned in the gravel-washer module by scrubbing and counterflow washing.

This fraction can be reused as a secondary construction material.

Sludge Treatment
The sludge-fraction, separated out during the physicochemical treatment process, is treated further, by the addition of chemical agents to generate a ‘filter cake’ that is suitable for disposal to the Augean landfill.

Process Water Treatment
The plant incorporates water treatment and recirculation.
