PORT CLARENCE PLANNING APPLICATIONS
Augean has submitted planning applications to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council for permissions specifically to accept wastes contaminated with small amounts of radioactivity – Low Level Waste – for treatment in the Waste Recovery Park or disposal into the hazardous and non-hazardous waste landfill sites.
An application for an Environmental Permit to accept LLW for disposal into the landfill has already been submitted to the Environment Agency. The permit application is supported by an Environmental Safety Case which contains a wide range of risk assessments in order to demonstrate to the Environment Agency that the proposals will not result in harm to people in the local area or to the environment. The Environment Agency are undertaking a determination process and have consulted on the Permit application. Their consultation ended on 31 January 2020.
A permit for the treatment of LLW at the Waste Recovery Park is already in place having satisfied the Environment Agency that the processes that handle LLW will be managed so that they are safe.
Augean has consulted with the community and other stakeholders about the proposed development as specified by legislation and local government guidance. Public Exhibitions about the proposals were held on 13 November 2019 at The Clarences Resource and Community Centre and on 14 November 2019 at Low Grange Community Centre, Billingham.
The planning applications that have been submitted have been amended where possible to reflect comments and feedback received from stakeholders that have been received during the consultation process.
